Celebrity Fight Night XIV March 2008
John W. Scherer continues his enthusiastic support of Celebrity Fight Night. It’s a fun-filled night where celebrities and professional athletes from all over the country enjoy the fun, but more importantly the annual event has raised tens of millions of dollars benefiting the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute which provides diagnostic and treatment services, research, and education for Parkinson’s disease.
When you hear about Parkinson’s disease, you may recognize such celebrities suffering from this debilitating disease such as actor Michael J. Fox, or the late Johnny Cash, but Muhammad Ali too was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the early 1980s. Although Muhammad Ali ended his boxing career in 1981 as a three-time World Heavyweight Boxing Champion with 56 wins, he continues to fight the challenges that came with the disease and continues to advocate on behalf of others living with Parkinson’s in raising money to fund treatment.
John Scherer says he was especially moved by actor Kevin Costner’s tribute to Ali, because it mirrored his own experience. Costner shared his remembrances of listening to some of the great Ali fights on the radio with his father, as did Scherer with his own father.
“Muhammad Ali remains the single most important athlete of the 20th century,” says Scherer. “He broke down barriers; and his personal and physical courage inside and outside the ring continues to this day. Simply put, he’s my hero.”
